I thought I would post an update as the site is being to look likes it’s been abandoned which definitely isn’t the case.

The current project I am working on should be launching around the end of August and then it is straight back onto the Oxcreative Re-design.

If there is anything you would like to see more/less of on the OxCreative site, or would like to see something specifically in terms of the actual design please let me know

My second week into full time freelancing and things are moving along. I am getting through projects that, when I was freelancing part-time in the evening, would have taken me weeks as opposed to days.

I am enjoying the flexibility that if I have had a late night, I can simply sleep in and work a little bit later in the afternoon.

Ralphy (our 1 year old Lhasa-Poo Puppy/Dog) is a lot more settled now I am working from home and it with the exception of a few moments, is getting better behaved as he is not left alone all day.

I still haven’t had time to get my portfolio finished but hope soon I will be able to as I imagine work will slow down over the Christmas period.

Overall, definitely getting used to the lifestyle and am getting time to myself in the evenings to relax.

I’m at the end of my first week full-time freelancing and there is one dominant feeling I have… tranquility. I have a truck-load of work to do at the moment yet do not feel stressed as my awesome clients (who I was dealing with before leaving my job and going full-time freelance) are happy to be getting more work completed by me now than when I freelanced part time and I make sure I plan my schedule well – so I can decide to switch off in the evening and forget about work.

I plan my schedule a week in advance, set myself a minimum amount of work to do per day and as long as I achieve that, I am happy. So far, I have worked less this week than I would do in my last job (probably around 10-15 hours less) and still earned more than what I would have there!

For those of you who may be considering going freelance, I have a few tips which will make the transition a bit easier:

Slowly Does It

There’s no rush and although you may be desperate to change your lifestyle or go freelance, rushing into it will only result in problems. I have been wanting to go full time freelance for about 4-5 years and prior to starting last week, had been planning it for around a year. In the past year I had dramatically increase the amount of freelance work I took on, working 3-4 hours per evening and also working weekends. This was not to ensure I had enough work/clients as well as to save up for taking ‘the leap’.

Planning Financially

Probably the biggest reason against going freelance for me was money. What happens if you have a slow month? what happens if you lose a major client or get sick? The simplest way around this for me was to save a buffer/reserve funds so that if it is quiet for a month or so, I can survive. It’s important to remember that if you are planning to go freelance from full-time employment you usually work a month in advance so when you leave you will have a months’ salary to get you through the following month. What’s even more important to remember is that whilst you will work in your first month you may not issue your invoices until the end of that month and depending on your invoicing terms, you may not receive any money until a month after issuing the invoice.

Planning a Schedule

It’s important to schedule work effectively so that you can always manage the workload whilst maintaining a reserve of time should any urgent or additional work crop up. If for example, you believe a project will take you 2 full days, advise the client it will take three. Work the first day on the project, then should anything arise your second day can be focussed on that with you completing the original project on the third day.
If nothing comes up, work on the project the second day and deliver it to the client a day early.

Get Connected

It’s important to keep in touch with other freelancers, agencies and individuals, even if you consider them to be competition. The reason being is that many freelancers and agencies hate to turn down work and so if they are too busy to do it, they would rather pass it to someone they know and potentially take a small commission for referring the work.

Already freelancing?

Why not share some of your tips and add a comment below!

For the past 18 months i’ve worked for a leading global cosmetics company as a web designer which means that freelancing and working on projects such as OxCreative.com have always played second fiddle.

It’s been a difficult 18months and I have struggled to adapt with the corporate lifestyle (after previously working in a very casual environment) finding it very restrictive and suffocating and as a result my mood, lifestyle and skillet have suffered.

After a lot of thought and financial calculations I have decided to take the plunge into the big bad world of freelancing! It’s something I have wanted to do for a while and believe it is the best move for me to take right now.

For my lovely loyal readers it means that I will be posting a heck of a lot more from November onwards and will be designing a new site in the next few months.

on top of this I will be working on a few new projects aimed at increasing efficiency and easing workload for designers, illustrators and developers alike!

I look forward to hearing your comments and any suggestions you have for improving OxCreative.com

For those of you who are tech-savvy, designers, Apple fans or have been even been online in the last few weeks, you would have seen or read at least one thing about Apple’s magical mystical update of it’s iPhone, the iPhone 4. Those of you who bought an iPhone 4 or have seen the news since its’ launch will know there has been a lot of unhappy people when it comes to signal and even more after Steve Jobs offered the wonderful tip of ‘just don’t hold your phone like that’.

A few ideas and questions have been swimming around in my head and I am starting to wonder if Apple knew of the issues with signal before they sold the iPhone 4 and had foreseen the unhappy consumers and woes ahead. There are two things primarily make me think this:

1) The leaked photo

most of you will recognise the image above – it’s the iPhone 4 image taken by Gizmodo of the iPhone 4 prototype found in a bar months before the official release. Originally it was thought that Apple put a black ‘bumper’ style case on the phone to disguise the prototype from any onlookers. After the whole antenna issue, Apple has officially advised that their wonderful bumpers will prevent you from bridging the connection between the antennas and restore that oh so precious signal. Could this encasing be a early revision of a bumper used to prevent the signal issue during the prototype stage?

2)Thou shall not ‘bumper’

This leads me to my next point – when… since the days of Apple becoming design-conscious do you recall them actively pushing any accessories that may take something away aesthetically from their designs? Apple in the past have be very reluctant to do this but for the iPhone 4 they are ‘all go’ and marketing/promoting the bumpers heavily. Then, when people have experience signal issues, Apple say ‘sorry about that… but why not try one of our bumpers as it will fix the issue’ (nudge nudge wink wink)!

Perhaps I am looking into it too much but it seems awfully suspicious looking back and seeing these strange occurences.

I think it is possible that Apple discovered the fault in the late prototyping/early manufacturing stage, realized the sheer cost of the mistake and done what they do best – sell you a ‘fix’ or a feature that is standard on most other devices but persuade you that it is carved from gold!

We would love to hear what all you lovely readers think about this so feel free to drop us your comments or even some theories of your own!

As many of you know, we are having what we consider ‘extreme weather’ in the UK. I am in Hampshire, which seems to be hit pretty badly – there is 3-4 inches of snow outside sitting on top of 2 inches of slush/ice and it is still snowing pretty heavy!

Anyway, I went out into the garden and up on the roof last night as there was an eerie orange glow where the clouds and snow had trapped the light pollution and though I would share some pictures (these were taken around 9.30pm at night!):

These are some plant pots snowed over in the garden after about 30 mins of snowfall (9.30pm)

For now, I will be sitting at home in bed with some hot chocolate and doing some work on my laptop!

Ok so we’re a little slow of the mark but Happy New Year from us all! We hope everyone had a good year in 2009 (Year of the OX!) but we hope you have an even better year in 2010.

I’ve been thinking about a few things that I would like to achieve in 2010. Whilst these are really specific to OxCreative, they are things that I think most of us could try to embrace:

1. Write more Blog Posts

More blog posts equals more content. More content equals more traffic. More traffic means lots of interaction, followers and good networking! It would be nice to start interacting with those in the community and so we are looking to post once every few days – even if it’s just a small update, just something to let you know we’re still here! Likewise, if you ever have a comment, question or just want a general chat you can get in touch with us via the website or twitter!

2. Take more photographs

Last year I bought a Canon 450d with a Canon 18-55 mm EF-S lens, Tamron 70-300mm Telephoto Lens and LowePro Slingshot backpack. I figured I was all set to venture off into the world of photography and in some sense I was… I managed to get some nice macro shots of the creatures that devoured my garden, but when it came to landscapes I couldn’t get it right. I realised I needed a tripod and some filters (UV and Polarizing) so my orders have now been placed and I should receive them shortly! You’ll be seeing more photography on the site and also I’ll be updating flickr.

(Photography is a pretty good way to learn about composition, imagery and creating different visual effects as well as being a great way to relax, get some fresh air and step away from the drawing board, desk or easel!)

3. Learn ActionScript

It’s something I have been on/off with for a while but I have decided to finally give it my all and have booked up with an Adobe Certified training company to teach me ActionScript 3 (a basic introduction) and also Objected Orientated (OOP) Advanced ActionScript 3 with Design Patterns.

If you are a web designer and have no coding skills, it is definitely worth thinking about learning some front-end development languages such as HTML/CSS, JavaScript and ActionScript. I have seen more often than not, Web design agencies are looking for multi-skilled and multi-faceted employees. The usual tends to be Designer/Front-end developer & Developer (Back-End/Front-end) which makes sense to have some degree of overlap and understanding of how things work.

4. Make an Application or game

I am not sure what I would like to make yet, but I think that in order to push my ‘yet to come’ ActionScript skills, I will need a project to challenge me and so will aim to complete an application or game by the end of 2010.

5. Exercise more and get healthy

Very cliché I know, but healthy body, healthy mind! I need to take my own advice on this one, cut down on the junk food and do some exercise. In the past few weeks I have worked on a few different projects (web design and corporate branding) and have spent the rest of the time eating, sleeping or playing Modern Warfare 2! Not a healthy lifestyle and so I am going to start cycling at least twice a week and see if it eases creative block, increases alertness & awareness and makes me feel a bit more like a healthier and a little less like a zombie!

6. Contribute more to Istockphoto

For those of you who don’t use Istockphoto you should really give it a try. They have an awesome community, a wealth of information and tutorials and also it allows you to not only save time by purchasing pre-created illustrations/photographs but also to contribute and generate some all important cash! Last year, I somewhat ambitiously joined the ‘race to gold’ where members actively try to gain a ‘gold canister’ which shows they have had more than 10,000 downloads of their files. This was a unrealistic of me as I only have 23 files on the site and so each would have had to been downloaded 434 times each (approx)!

This year I am going for the modest ‘bronze canister’ (250 downloads) and would like to get close to silver (2,500 downloads).

I would love to hear what others have for their New Years’ resolutions so why not drop us a comment at the bottom of this post and let us know what you’ll be doing to challenge yourself in 2010.

I try to avoid ranting within the OxCreative blog but I stumbled upon a document that really annoyed me. Whilst studying at the University of Portsmouth I competed in their “enterprise challenge for business” in 2005.

My business idea was to set up a creative agency which would source external work and give students and supply it to freelancing students. The agency would allocate the work and project managed each task (overseeing and ensuring it is to a high standard). For the project management and finding of work, the agency would take a slice of the revenue and would be self-sufficient and eventually profitable.

My idea was rejected and I thought nothing more of it. A few months later, in early 2006, I was discussing with a friend the idea that I submitted in the Enterprise Challenge and how I was unsuccessful. He advised me that the University of Portsmouth had approached someone to set up an agency in the same way my original idea was given to the University of Portsmouth – it even had a name… Purple Cube. My heart dropped… surely an educational organisation would not stoop as low to actually steal ideas from students through the means of a competition? Well it turned out they did.

I contacted the department in charge of the Enterprise challenge and was promptly called in for a meeting. They advised me that they had planned the idea a very long time ago and it was not anything to do with the enterprise challenge (this is important later).

I stated I did not wish to argue ownership of the idea but simply wanted to know why my idea was not good enough if it was already something that the University of Portsmouth was looking into? After all, my idea was to create a service/business that not only was profitable but also gave something back – in this case, it would allow students to gain experience and earn cash so when they graduate they are ready to start their creative careers. I certainly didn’t want the project to stop.

I was told that they would like me to be involved with the project but after lots of calls and emails back and forth they eventually stop responding to me and I did not hear any more about it.

Flash forward to today and I found the following in a University of Portsmouth document which you can download from www.port.ac.uk/aboutus/theuniversity/downloads/filetodownload,92912,en.pdf

The extract above highlighted in yellow discusses how the enterprise challenge can help students set up businesses and use prize money to develop their ideas. it then goes on directly to say that “Purple Cube is a student-run company that takes in external projects and gives the students to get used to working on real customers on real projects”. This would imply that a student submitted an idea, won the enterprise challenge and used the prize money supplied by the University of Portsmouth to develop Purple Cube… WRONG! The University of Portsmouth stole my idea (I still have emails and docs including entry forms as proof), approached others to implement it and after not being able to find someone to complete the project, set it up themselves.

For an organisation such as the University of Portsmouth, who even have a course unit entitled “business ethics”, it must be said that this is a disgusting breach of trust between the University and a student and such dishonest behaviour needs to be brought to public attention.

Shame on the University of Portsmouth!
