Late last month, I decided that photography would be a good way to develop a better understanding of composition and would be good as a tool to develop my “artistic eye/eye for design”. I went to Jessops and decided to purchase a Canon Digital Rebel XSi SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Canon 450D In Europe) and a Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro Zoom Lens.

I have managed to get some really good levels of detail with the camera and the build quality is not bad. The Rebel Xsi (450D) is a good body for those wishing to start photography as a hobby but don’t want to pay thousands for a higher spec model.

I also bought the Digital SLR Cameras & Photography For Dummies book which, despite it’s title making me feel inadequate, is actually a very good read. I tried a few other Digital SLR books but they expect you to know the basics of photography if you own a Digital SLR and refer to topics they expect you to understand. I for example, knew what ISO settings would do when changed but didn’t understand how or why. This book explains everything from ISO settings, to improving your photographic skills and fine tuning your photography using software such as Adobe Photoshop.

In the following weeks, I will slowly be added to my website and also to my flickr account so you can see my progress in photography.
